| Melnik, Bulgaria 2001
|
Surrounded by mountains, Melnik is in southwestern Bulgaria in the Macedonia region, only 28 km (17 mi) from the Greek border. It once was a thriving small city (20,000 inhabitants in 1880), but now has only about 500 residents. The city survives on wine making and tourism now.
